Why product images need ALT text
Accessibility
Shoppers who use screen readers hear the ALT text instead of seeing the picture. A product photo without it is just a blank spot in the page.
Image search
Search engines read ALT text to understand what an image shows. Clear text helps your products show up when people search for pictures.

A store with hundreds of products has thousands of images. Opening each one in the Shopify admin to type a description is hours of work that nobody wants to do.

One button for the whole store
Press “Add ALT text to all images”. Every image that has no ALT text gets one, taken from the product name (extra photos get “(2)”, “(3)”). Images that already have ALT text are left alone.

Optional AI descriptions with your own key
Want a unique sentence for each picture? Add your own AI key (OpenAI, Google Gemini, Groq or OpenRouter) and tick “Use AI for the text”. The AI looks at the image and writes what it shows, in your store’s language. AI usage is billed by your provider, not by us.

How much does Pixalt cost?
A 7-day free trial, then $2 per month. The charge goes through Shopify. If you use AI mode, the AI provider you connect bills its own usage separately.
Will it overwrite ALT text I already wrote?
No. Images that already have ALT text are left alone. Pixalt only fills in the ones that are empty.
Do I need an AI key?
No. By default the ALT text comes from the product name and needs no AI at all. The AI key is optional and only for unique descriptions.
What happens with new products?
“Keep doing this for new products automatically” is on by default. When you add or change a product, its images without ALT text get one within about a minute.
Which data does the app use?
It reads your products and their images, and writes ALT text back to those images. Details are in our privacy policy.
